Another casino that is closer to Orlando is the Victory Casino Cruise Ship out of Port Canaveral, Florida, which is about 48 minutes east of Orlando. Currently the ship is sailing twice a day on Wednesday - Sunday. A boarding pass at $13.00 is required to enjoy the 600 slots and 27 table games for the duration of the 5 - 6 hour cruise.

Gambling Casinos in Key West or the Florida Keys

There are no gambling casinos near the Florida Keys and Key West. The closest casinos to the Keys are in or near Miami. As with many states, Florida gaming regulations have evolved as a witches brew of laws, regulations, and afterthoughts from legislators that were driven by an assortment of motivations. To top it all off, Florida voters in November 2018 passed an amendment to the Florida constitution that prohibits any new casinos without voter approval.  A similar referendum abolished dog racing in Florida effective January 1, 2021.

Since many closed dog tracks had card rooms, those card rooms have been allowed to continue with poker games in a somewhat limited scope. Many card rooms hold frequent poker tournaments and all offer food and cocktail service.

There are 25 active card rooms in Florida of various sizes and offering a variety of poker games. Some of the card rooms are part of a full casino that offers slots and may also have electronic table games such as roulette. Florida law does not permit live roulette and craps tables anywhere.

Seminole and Miccosukee Indian Casinos

American Indians, by virtue of owning Indian reservations, are able to build casinos on the reservations and in some cases at other sites. In Florida, the Seminole Indian tribe operates three hotel casinos plus several non hotel casino sites throughout the state. Additionally, the Miccosukee tribe operates the Miccosukee Resort and Gaming Hotel just outside of Miami. The Indian owned casinos are the only casinos in Florida that are allowed to offer live blackjack tables.

Florida Racinos

Gambling venues at horse racing tracks, former dog racing tracks and Jai Alai frontons are called Racinos. Florida has a mishmash of casino laws that means poker tables are permitted at horse tracks, former dog tracks, and at Jai Alai frontons.

Gaming machines such as slots and table games are permitted in addition to card rooms in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

Miami-Dade and Broward County (Hollywood - Fort Lauderdale) Exceptions

There are exceptions to the poker room only rules for horse race tracks, and Jai-Alai frontons in Miami-Dade County and Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pompano Beach) where slots and table games are allowed in addition to poker tables.
